Research Papers

  • Short-term effect of intravitreal Anti-VEGFs delivery on intraocular pressure – The result of this research has been published in the BJO[7]. Our study looked into the effect of Anti-VEGF (Macugen, Avastin, and Lucentis) on the intraocular pressure of ARMD patients. The study was published. Please see the publications section above.
  • Use of antiviral prophylaxis in the graft survival in HSK patient – Mr SD Cook, Mr D Tole and I were looking into the effect of the antiviral prophylaxis in the graft survival at the 12-month, 24-month and 60-month periods. Our study was published. Please see the publications section above.
  • Effectiveness of Posterior Juxtascleral Depot (PJD) Injection of Anecortave in ARMD – I was a certified ophthalmologist performing the PJD injection of Anecortave (Phase II Research Drug) in ARMD patients at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Northern Ireland. This was a double-blinded multi-centre randomised control study which was funded by Alcon and conducted by Professor Chakravarty.
  • Randomised Control Study on the Effects of Mitomycin-C in Adult Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy – I was involved in this randomised controlled study on the effects of Mitomycin C versus placebo in adult endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. This research was planned as a prospective randomised double blind study to evaluate the role of Mitomycin C in the success of endoscopic DCR. The Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Departments at Ninewells University Hospital, Dundee conducted the study.

Audits

  • Management of cataract in Fuch’s Dystrophy patients (2018) – I have recommended a guideline in order to reduce postoperative complications in Fuch’s Endothelial Dystrophy patients undergoing cataract surgery following this audit in 2018. This guideline recommends changes in preoperative assessment of patients with Fuch’s and surgical techniques to reduce the complications. This audit was presented in the trust audit meeting.
  • The Cross Bay Infectious Keratitis (2012) – I designed and conducted this audit which looked into the aetiology, clinical presentation, risk factors, management and outcomes of infectious keratitis across the Morecambe Bay at three hospitals in University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay. The audit recommended a treatment protocol for infectious keratitis in order to improve the outcome. This audit was presented to the Solway Eye Group Annual Meeting in November 2012.
  • The Outcomes of Keratoplasty in Patients with Herpetic Keratitis (2008) – This audit looked into the outcome of 12 year Keratoplasty in patients with a history of herpetic keratitis in the Royal Victoria Hospital, a tertiary cornea and external diseases centre in Northern Ireland, between 1994 and 2006. This study looked into the pre and postoperative visual acuities, the seniority of surgeon, the type of Keratoplasty (PK, LK, and DALK), the postoperative management, and the final refractive status. This audit recommended the Keratoplasty, particularly DALK, in patients with HSK in order to improve their vision. It was submitted as an oral presentation for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Congress in 2008.
  • Lacrimal Gland Biopsy (2007) – This audit reviewed the patients undergoing lacrimal gland biopsy in Northern Ireland between 2000 and 2006. The patients were identified from the database of Belfast Institute of Pathology. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, laboratory investigations, imaging, histopathology reports and treatment details were evaluated. This study was presented at the 25th annual congress of European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery & Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPSRS) in Slovenia in September 2007.
  • Enucleation and Evisceration Audit (2007) – This audit looked into the indications, surgical techniques, and rate of intraoperative and postoperative complications following enucleation and evisceration surgery between January 2000 and December 2005 in the regional oculoplastics centres in Northern Ireland. This audit was presented as a poster at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Congress in May 2007.
  • Biometry Audit – This audit looked into the refractive status of 210 patients following cataract surgery at the Ophthalmology Department in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary between November 2000 and April 2001. The aim of the audit was to assess whether the postoperative refractive status of those patients were within one dioptre of the expected value. It revealed 96% of patients achieved the above target. The audit discussed the causes of failure in 4% of patients and also suggested the solutions to improve the current practice of biometry at the department.
  • Annual Strabismus Surgery – A prospective study was undertaken to look into strabismus surgery at the Ophthalmology Department in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary for the year 2001. The aim of the study was to assess patients two weeks before and 12 weeks after surgery. The audit looked into the waiting time for surgery, the type of operation, the dioptric difference between pre and postoperative measurements and the percentage of under-correction and over-correction.
  • Refraction Clinic Update – An audit was undertaken to look into the refraction clinics at the Ophthalmology Department in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary between August and December 2001. The study showed the number of clinics, the number of patients at each clinic, the new patients to follow-up, patients ratio, the DNA rate and the waiting time for a refraction appointment within the above period.
