Crosslinking

Cornea cross-linking has revolutionised the treatment of keratoconus in the 21st century. Finally, we have a treatment which can prevent the deterioration of vision in Keratoconus patients. It is a NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence in the UK) approved procedure that has been extensively performed world over the past 10 years. Established on the principles of the Dresden protocol whereby UV-A light irradiation is used to treat Keratoconus, a degenerative corneal disease affecting both eyes resulting in corneal thinning, misshapen cornea and refractive error. Cross-Linking procedures have been aimed at mainly younger patients exhibiting progressive disease. The aim of treatment is therefore to halt disease progression and to retain the best visual acuity as possible. A majority of keratoconus patients with a timely cross- linking do not require cornea graft a later age. This procedure is simpler than cornea graft with extremely higher safety profile and much shorter recovery compared to cornea graft procedures.
